Canon PowerShot SX500 IS REVIEW:

Canon PowerShot SX500 IS: Zooming in on the Budget

Heavy cameras with protruding lenses are passé as most of us are slowly shifting towards the sleeker and compacter options. The DSLR fanaticism is bound to surge even more but amidst this cluttered domain, the system and point-to-shoot cameras would be the ones to invest into. While the budget constraints are carefully eliminated, most of these are easy to carry along and deliver crispy images are all times. One such option happens to be the Canon PowerShot SX500 IS which readily delivers gripping performances in terms of budget considerations and image quality.

Pros: Ultra-wide lens offering 30X of zooming capability is certainly quite an addition whereas the extremely light body makes the gadget quite easy to carry around. Manual controls and direct access tabs are present whereas the image stabilizer is certainly a catch at the given price range.

Cons: The autofocus still lags quite a bit when the fast paced subjects are to be captured and this result in the occurrence of multiple stutters and hindrances. Low-light shots aren’t its greatest asset as colors do falter a bit when the ISO sensitivity surges beyond the comfortable arena.

One might consider buying this gadget only for the Super Zooming capabilities on offer whereas the CCD sensor still looks lackluster in comparison to the existing contemporaries.

Capture Quality:

This section is completely user-specific as we still look to put in our own inferences into the scheme of things. We frankly weren’t expecting DSLR quality images and what came out was more on the satisfactory lines. While the outdoor shots look reasonably vibrant and crisp, the low-light photography is more of a letdown with this camera. Onscreen viewing is however smaller than the actual prints owing to the resolution and other glitches surrounding the aspect ratio. The pixel peepers are ought to be disappointed as for the image noises appearing at ISO 100 and the full quality snapshots are kind of blurry at times. If one is willing to go up to ISO 400, yellow blotching and varied artifacts have to be dealt with. The modus operandi however aims a dropping the shutter speed automatically once the ISO starts going up, mostly in the Auto mode. Video quality is more of expected at 720p but is still a better bet than most camcorders coming up in recent years. CCD sensors aren’t the best performing hardware options but still render the needed support in terms of sizeable videos and blur free images, at most times.

Shooting Performances:

Here is one of the first cameras which featured the AF system into the mix and hence the association goes back quite a long way. With the lighter lens arrangement and the enhanced lens motor, the PowerShot SX500 IS comes out to be quite an efficient performer, atleast at a budget. Faster AF conversions and single shot timings are witnessed at an average rate of 2.5 seconds.  Shutter lag isn’t prevalent to such a great extent while a minor 0.3 second hiatus can still be encountered. Continuous or the burst shooting modes are associated with this gadget whereas one can either opt for the AF spec while capturing the images. The rates do vary as the 0.6frames per second is allotted when the AF mechanism is turned on which goes up to 0.8 sans this spec. Here is the 16MP sensor resolution on offer in addition to the optical image stabilizer, avoiding those min or shakes and associated blemishes.

Design and Added Features:

This is one remarkably compact system camera with a lighter lens based framework. While the depth happens to be a mere 4 inch, this is one feathery device with added direct controllers. Easy to press buttons are included whereas the 3 inch LCD does come in handy for framing the images rather perfectly. The electronic viewfinder however misses out which might be a deal breaker for most of the users! One might make use of the one touch recording button for powering on the movie mode. In comes the elusive navigation scroll wheel with varied specifications featuring ISO sensitivity and the multiple flash modes.  The additional room between the ergonomically designed grip and the lens barrel is quite a sizeable one, allowing the user to get a better hold and work accordingly. There is an additional button dedicated to the framing needs which serves a greater purpose of bringing back the subjects into the frame. Lens rattle is not an issue with the PowerShot SX500 IS which is aesthetically fabricated even with the plastic covering all around. The sturdy feel does auger well with the greenest of the lensman and makes work fun for the beginners and semi-professionals alike.

Overall the PowerShot SX500 IS is one perfect gadget for those who are willing to compromise on the low-light image quality for a feathery body and the intelligent image processing spec.
