Canon IXUS 160: Featuring a 20MP Sensor and 8X Zoom
Canon finally penetrates the entry-level market with its latest ultra-compact in IXUS 160. This gadget will soon be made available globally and packs in a lot of enviable features. The specs sheet associated with this camera is detailed as follows:
Sensor and Lens
The IXUS 160 boasts of a 20MP image sensor with a maximum resolution of 5152x3864 pixels. Besides the maximum limit, other resolutions are also supported by this camera. This CCD sensor comes with several aspect ratios in 4:3 and the standard 16:9. In terms of dimensions, the image sensor measures 6.17mm x 4.55mm. A DIGIC 4+ image processor is paired along for realizing high-quality images and videos.
The IXUS 160 offers an 8X zooming lens with a focal length equivalent range of 28-224mm. This optical zooming prowess works perfectly with the 4X digital zoom. This lens offers a maximum aperture range of F3.2-F6.9, meant for both wide-angle shots and even the telephoto. Manual focus is given a miss but the gadget packs in 9 focus points. Normal focus range of 5cm is featured in addition to the macro focus range of 1cm.Being an entry level camera, mechanical image stabilization isn’t available and only the digital option is packed in. Manual ISO sensitivity range is 100-1600 besides the availability of the Auto mode.5 white balance presets are supported and the custom white balance scheme is also incorporated. RAW format is missing and only the Fine JPEG quality level is existent.
Scene Modes and Video
In terms of modes, the autofocus supports contrast detect, center, tracking and many more. Minimum shutter speed limit is 15 sec for this camera besides a maximum tick of 1/2000 sec. Subject or scene modes are however featured in abundance. This entry-level ultra-compact supports the built-in flash with an exhaustive range of 3.00m. Several flash modes are also available in the form of Auto, On, Off and the Slow Synchro. Multiple metering modes are featured which include Multi, Spot and the Center-weighted. Other exciting features include the burst shooting mode at 0.8fps and the Exposure compensation mode.
This camera supports HD or 720p video capturing at 25 frames per second. 480p movie captures are also featured at 30 frames per second. Supported video modes include MPEG-4 and H.264 with mono speaker and microphone included. This gadget houses a dedicated button for capturing those HD moments with ease besides the Smart AUTO mode.
The IXUS 160 offers a 2.7 inch TFT LCD screen with a display resolution of 230K dots. This is one fixed panel which incorporates the Live Viewing option.
Connectivity and Storage
The IXUS 160 supports USB 2.0 for faster file transfers at 480Mbit/sec. In terms of storage, this camera offers multi-card compatibility with the supported modes being SD, SDHC and SDXC.
Design and Battery
In terms of physicality, the IXUS 160 measures 95mmx54mmx22mm and weighs 127g. Battery is a NB-11L/LH Li-Ion module with the ECO mode included, mainly for extending the battery life. This camera supports 220 shots on a single charge.
