Canon EOS 7D Mark II with 18-135 mm Lens REVIEW:

Canon launched the 7D DSLR camera back in 2009. The upgraded version’s rumours were creating quite the hype among Canon enthusiasts. The Canon EOS 7D is here as the manufacturer’s flagship. This camera is the best in its class APS-C format DSLR. This DSLR that shoots impeccable quality images is available for Rs. 61,000*/- with the 18-135 mm lens kit. Its 20 Megapixel APS-C sensor is quite the shooting companion that allows rich and detailed photos and videos.

The Canon EOS 7D has a Dual Digic 6 image-processing engine that makes the camera fast and more responsive. The processor also enables the camera to shoot at enables a maximum continuous shooting speed of 10 frames per second. The ISO on this camera ranges from 100 to 16000; it also has expansion settings up to ISO 51,200. The camera

Impressively, the 7D’s 65-point system is highly respected in the DSLR world. All the points are more sensitive cross-type. Additionally, the central point is a dual-cross type at f/2.8 and ranges up to f/8. This camera’s aperture is advantageous essentially for those photographers who like to keep shuffling their telephoto lenses.

The camera has EOS iTR AF and AI Servo AF III autofocus technologies incorporated into it. These technologies give the photographer a selection of six shooting scenarios to tailor the AF system so it has the best chance of keeping a moving subject sharp. The 150k-pixel RGB infrared sensor handles the camera’s exposure settings. The sensor has pixels that are best suited for phase detection focusing or Dual Pixel AF. This AF can be used in Live view as well as the Video mode on the camera. This can also enable smoother ad faster focusing than contrast detection alone.

The camera is also beneficial to videographers as the Full HD videos can be shot in Mov or MP4 format at up to 60p in NTSC mode or 50p in PAL mode. The camera has an HDMI port that can provide a clean an uncompressed feed to the external recorders and there are ports to connect both microphone as well as a headphone jack for better sound recording and monitoring. Image and files can be transferred via USB 3.0. There are bracket ships with the camera to hold the cable securely while shooting.

The camera has a 3-inch 1040k-dot LCD screen. The images and videos look stunning and visually appealing. The 7D also has an optical viewfinder too. It shows 100% of the field of view and is capable of displaying key information such as the drive mode when the appropriate control is used to make an adjustment. It also has an electronic level that is visible at the top of the viewfinder and works independently of the AF buttons.

Canon also included Flicker detection option that when selected changes the shutter lag for more consistent exposure.

Build and Handling:

The Canon 7D is 820 grams and measures 148.2 x110 x 7 x 73.5mm. The camera has improved dust and water resistance. This is the second most weather-resistant Canon SLR camera. It has a magnesium ally chassis, but the camera feels quite solid and comfortable in the hand. It has textured coating on its grips and feels quite like an enthusiast-level camera.

The 7D has a few control layout changes as opposed to the old one. The camera has a sprung lever and a mini-joystick control. It also has a function controller for the main control dial in front of the shutter release on the top of the camera. The dial can be used to adjust one of a small collection of features including sensitivity.

The camera also has a Rate button to the left of the LCD on the back of the camera. This helps the photographer quickly rate the images that s/he captured. The camera also has a Picture Style Button and there is a Creative Photo button too that gives the user access to the Picture Style, Multiple Exposure as well as HDR options. There is a Review Mode too that enables the photographer to compare images side-by-side.

The camera lacks a Q button that is placed below the mini-joystick controller. The Quick menu is quicker to access on this camera. There is an info button that is relocated above the LCD screen. There is a lock on the mode dial on the camera too. The menu system on this camera is familiar to Canon EOS and the arrangement is pretty logical.

The camera has Dual Card Slots that accept SD/SDHC as well as SDXC cards and the other slot is compatible with Compact Flash (CF) cards. The CF card on the camera is faster and has better heat resistant capabilities than the SD media. The advantage of this is that it can shoot at 10 fps.

The camera also highlights an intervalometer that shoots time-lapse sequences and has multiple exposure mode, built in compass as well as GPS technology. This makes Geo-tagging of images quite easy and hassle free. The camera however, lacks Wi-Fi connectivity and it does get challenging for photographers to control the camera remotely. On the contrary, the camera has Eye-Fi card support to compensate for the lack of Wi-Fi.

Canon has significantly improved the performance of the 7D. The Digic 6 processor has improved the burst shooting speed from 8fps to 10 fps. Sadly, this camera isn’t the fastest APS-C camera around. There are cameras that shoot at even 15fps. That said, the performance of the 7D is excellent. The camera also has an LP-E6 battery that lasts quite long.

18-135 mm lens kit:

The camera comes along with 18-135 mm lens kit. This is an excellent kit to give the photographer a hand at various different kinds of photography (wildlife, landscape, portrait). Undoubtedly, the photography results are quite appealing. The camera also shoots 1080p videos; shooting 4k videos should have been added to the 7D to make competition even more aggressive.

Bottom line:

The Canon 7D is quite a unique DSLR camera offering from Canon. It has definitely proven its worth to various photographers and continues to do so. Hence, this camera is one of the best APS-C format cameras in the market currently.
