The new HTC One M8 is the successor to the last year’s heartthrob HTC One M7. Similar to its predecessor, One M8 has been given a gorgeous design, upgraded hardware, improved UI and bunch of unique features. Considering the present competition from other manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG etc. there are a lot of expectations from One M8. So does it really succeed in the flagship war? Let’s find out.
Design & Display:
HTC has done it again. One M8 is much more beautiful than the last year’s M7. The design is absolutely stunning with superb attention to detail. More than 90% of the chassis is made of metal, with a curved design that fits well in hand. It feels so good to hold it in the hand and without any doubt, it’s the best looking Android smartphone now. The only minor flaw would be – the polished metal finish makes it a bit slipper to hold. The Display is of 5 inch Full HD IPS display with a pixel density of 441ppi. This is one of the best 1080p displays which have ever seen. Colors look striking and viewing angles are really good that you won’t feel like colors are washed away and sunlight legibility is really great.
The device comes up with Android KitKat 4.4.2 with Sense 6 which looks more improved and polished than the previous skin. The icons, toggle switches in notification bar, widgets and everything else looks more flattened and minimalistic. The lockscreen looks different and it has the ability to unlock the device by swiping gesture, which is termed as “Motion Launch” Feature. You can even double tap to wake up the screen. We also get the BlinkFeed and other Camera Apps which we have seen with One M7. The big change is, HTC has given it onscreen navigation buttons instead of capacitive keys.
The device comes with the Dual 4MP UltraPixel rear camera which is almost the same one M7 had last year. But we have 5MP camera with 1080p recording at the front. This feels strange since we have never seen such a device with the front cam having higher resolution than the rear one. But this should be a good news to people who love taking selfies. We also have a Dual LED flash for the rear cam. There are a bunch of camera modes like Zoe, Selfie, HDR, Dual Capture, Pan 360 etc. The image quality is really good and seems to be improved from the original One. Focusing is smooth and camera is really quick in focusing and taking pictures. The image processing is also quite impressive and though the bunch of modes and tweaks provided, you can experiment a lot and take innovative and variety of pictures with it. The low light photography is also improved well and video recording is also excellent with 1080p clarity. Overall, the camera lives upto the expectations. Audio capabilities are blessed with BoomSound stereo speakers in the front. The audio quality is one of the best we’ve ever seen in a mobile device. It is not only the loudest, but also produces a great output in clarity. Even when you plug headphones, the audio quality is really impressive.
Connectivity & Additional features:
The device is a single sim version (Nano Sim), supports Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, usb on the go and even NFC. Thanks to the Infrared port, the device can also be used to control TV and other media devices. There is a microSD card slot too, which supports upto 128GB. Call quality is really good and network reception doesn’t have any issues.
Performance & Battery:
The device comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with 2.3GHz quad-core CPU and Adreno 330 GPU. Considering this hardware, the processor and gaming performances are expected to be higher and the phone is capable of such performance. The Antutu score is around 37k, which is higher than LG G2 and Note 3. Geekbench 3 score is around 2367 which is lesser than Nexus 5 and Iphone 5s but better than LG G2 and Note 3 Neo. The Quadrant score is where the device excels and scored higher than almost all the devices with 25k. Even for the GPU scores, the device scored pretty high than most of the rivals. Overal Performance of the device is excellent. The device has a battery of 2600mAh which easily lasts more than a day under normal usage and lasts a full day even for a rigorous usage. The device also comes up with power saving mode so that you can squeeze the most out of the battery.

The HTC One M8 is stylish phone blessed with a whole lot of great features and performance. It has a beautiful design, best audio output, excellent GPU, and a good camera. Ofcourse there are few let downs, and lack of few features which the rivals offer. With these features and price tag, the present rivals are Xperia Z2, LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5. Each of them have their own ups and downs. It’s really difficult to say which the best one among them is. So the final decision depends on what you prefer. We highly recommend the HTC One M8 and HTC has to be praised for bringing up for such an excellent device.
