HP Slate 7 VoiceTab REVIEW:

HP Slate 7 Voice Tab: Looking into the Future of Phablets

Tablets with voice support are usually preferred in recent times owing to the budget constraints bothering the common man. These ‘Phablets’ have mostly lived up to the hype created and HP goes a step further by introducing an economical option in the form of HP Slate 7 Voice Tab, a tablet with built-in calling features. But there is much more to this Phablet than just the budget friendliness and this extensive review would help the customers unearth the same.

While many features have been willingly stripped, HP Slate 7 did no good to its reputation by eliminating certain necessities viz. a larger storage space. Again the camera quality was nothing to crave about but the introduction of the HP Slate 7 Voice Tab combined power with performance and a complete review would be necessary for looking at the set of pros and cons associated with the same.

The 7 inch screen is certainly easy to hold and the silver spice enclosing the edges looks brilliant as well. Although the body is fully made up of plastic, the design and build do look classy. One can find the Micro-USB channel sitting pretty at the bottom edge whereas the narrow grille doesn’t mar the look either. Pinhole for the microphone and the headphone jack can be seen at the topmost edge whereas the right-hand side shelters the power/ sleep tab. The volume rocker sits in tightly at the right-most edge followed by the HP logo on the rubberized rear. This device doesn’t feel too heavy although it is the one of the heavier ones available. Aesthetic viability is ensured as the dark bezel complements the gray back side perfectly but still interferes with the silver spine which is just 9.5mm thick. Overall a good device to hold and carry around

Nothing great about the display as HP Slate 7 Voice Tab sacrifices a few hundred pixels to justify the low end cost. The resolution is kept at 1280 x 800 pixels which renders a jaggy texture followed by the highly diminished clarity. Zooming in can save a few glares but nevertheless puts a lot of strain on your eyes. Most viewing angles are covered by the Fringe Field based switching technology which guarantees a better viewing experience followed by the standard 216 PPI density. One can still extract out a reasonable multimedia performance as the QUE IPS technology surely packs a punch. Low resolution interferes with the clarity making it just an average performer.

Software Specs and Storage:

This device features nothing great in terms of software as the Android 4.2.2 does sound a bit archaic. One may enjoy the entire Jellybean experience but a lot stills lacks in this overhyped device. Perpetual updates are supported and certain applications like the pull-down menu and shortcuts fit in perfectly with the Phablet.  If complemented with proper headphones, the sound output is exceedingly great but the speakers in isolation do lack the punch. The memory slot can be extended up to 32GB beyond the built-in storage space of 16GB. Again the 1GB RAM allows multitasking while handling games with seamless ease. The bass heavy effects are good thereby providing a satisfactory performance followed by a sizeable storage.

Chipset level specifications:

HP Slate 7 Voice Tab sports the quad-core CPU with 1.2GHz clock frequency which delivers an improved gaming performance. Low level games like Angry Birds run smoothly whereas certain high end ones run along with minimal lag. Again the Marvel PXA1088 working on the quad-core variation allows the user to multitask with significant ease. Other hardware specifications include Bluetooth2.1 EDR followed by the accelerometer which acts as a desirable sensor. What missed out on the previous version is included in the form of GPS hardware which is quite a telling inclusion for someone looking for certain navigation features. If the cons are to be focused upon, the OS crashes at times and the hard reset can only bring the device back to normal. Otherwise one can make use of the Geo-tagging sensors followed by the gyroscope for playing games better.

This section is a show stealer in some aspects like the competent hardware and chipset variants.

It has been seen that most low-end devices feature incompetent cameras and HP Slate 7 Voice tab is no different. Both the front and rear end cameras capture snapshots which are below par and also end up missing frames while recording videos. The front camera is a 2MP variant which is a mere formality rather being a utility. Again the 5MP rear camera tries to save the day for the device and delivers a satisfactory performance.

An average performance is ensured as better shots can be taken in daylight.

One can thus infer that if low budget Phablets are preferred then the HP Slate 7 VoiceTab is surely a go-to option. Video playback encounters the occasional stutter whereas the sound leaves much to be desired. The battery backup is astonishing with the 4100 mAh Li-Ion non-removal option provides hours of multimedia and voice calling experience.
