Gionee Elife E7 3GB RAM Overview
The Chinese maker Gionee started to taste little bit of success and fame by launching some of the good phones like Elife E6. This time around they have come with more advanced Elife E7, which comes with Gionee’s own UI Amigo and a whopping 16MP camera. The phone is launched in 2 versions – 16GB and 32 GB. We have seen the 16 GB version which impressed to a great extent except for the lack of micro SD slot. Let us find out what the 32 GB version has and see whether it makes for a better choice.
Design & Display:
The device is more or less the same as of its 16 GB version. The design is very decent and the smooth finishing and unibody look makes for a more premium feel. The phone is stylish in its own way and though it doesn’t really stand out among the crowd, it’s still a very elegant phone. At the front we have Gorilla Glass 3 scratch resistant protection. The device is 9.5 mm thick but it feels very thin and very comfortable to hold. The phone comes with a 5.5 inch Full HD display with 1080x1920 resolution coming at 401 ppi. As expected based on the spec sheet, the display is stunning with beautiful looking colors which are vibrant enough to impress you and viewing angles too are wider. Brightness levels are good and in the bright sun light it’s not so bad.
The phone comes with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and surprisingly with Gionee’s own Amigo 2.0 UI instead of stock UI. Once you look at the UI, you will notice that it’s completely different from what we have seen from other makes. Most of the UI seems to be inspired from IOS 7. All the apps are stacked in the homescreen itself, which incase of Android wouldn’t be so comfortable to use. Sometimes it will be so frustrating to search for an app if there are too many apps installed. There is some good number of gestures and animations but it feels more confusing and frustrating to use them. There are lot of bundled apps some of which are Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Kingsoft Office, UC browser etc. Anyway, though they came up with a beautiful UI, the general usage is tad confusing if you’re used to stock or TouchWiz and Gionee could have better gone for stock instead.
Camera & Audio:
The phone seems to be camera-centric and comes with a whopping 16MP camera with auto focus and LED flash at the back. Added to this, the front cam too is of surprisingly 8MP. Camera interface is a bit different from the rest of the Androids’. There are two modes, simple mode and professional mode and professional mode comes with a lot of options for tweaking. As expected, the image quality is impressive. Images have a great amount of detail in them and colors too look natural and bright. Noise is minimal and we don’t see any distortion in the images. Even in low light the images looked quite well and image processing is handled well enough to get you a good looking picture. Overall the camera is great and would be the major USP for the device. Regarding the audio output, the loudspeaker doesn’t have that clarity we were expecting and it isn’t so loud either. But with a pair of headphones, it feels quite better.
Connectivity & Additional Features:
Generally we all expect a Chinese phone to be dual sim one, since most of them are usually launching phones which support two sim cards. But to our surprise, the phone only supports one micro sim. Network reception is good and we didn’t face any call drop issues. The call quality is good and both the parties are able to hear clear voices but loudspeaker loudness could have been better. The phone also has a built in call recording option. The phone also supports Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G, FM Radio, A-GPS and even NFC. Internal memory is of 32 GB and this version too doesn’t have any micro SD slot. Ofcourse for most of them, 32 GB might be sufficient, but if we have a great display, excellent camera and decent media playback, we do expect a micro SD card slot so that we can store ample number of images, videos or music.
Performance & Battery:
The processor specs of the phone look so impressive and it seems to beat most of the flagship rivals here. The phone runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with a quad core 2.5 Hz processor, 3GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. The phone managed to mark an impressive score in benchmark tests, scoring around 35k in Antutu, surpassing most of the current flagships. Multi-tasking feature too seems to be inspired from IOS and looks more confusing but the phone is able to handle multi heavy apps well. Most of the heavy games played so well and the phone didn’t show any hiccups. The phone comes with a 2500mAh which can easily last more than a day under normal usage. But take note, this is a non-removable battery which is becoming common in most of the flagships but it’s not so welcome because you would have to goto the service centre and wait for some days just to replace the battery if it’s not working.
Elegant design Great camera Decent battery life Excellent performance Good display
Disappointing custom UI Non removable battery No micro SD slot
So far, the 32GB version of Gionee Elife E7 is an impressive device and is capable to beat most of the flagship rivals in the competition. The excellent camera and processor performance is just enough to attract most of the customers, but somehow all the impression is spoiled only by the Amigo UI. If Gionee could work on an update where you can change to custom UI, then this would be a great choice for anyone interested in higher midrange or flagship phones. If you’re okay with the custom UI and not so reputed brand, this phone is definitely a great choice.
